Dusk and dawn are my favorite moments for photography. When the sun is just below the horizon, the air is still and the silence seems to radiate a powerful energy. And, for the photographer who knows how to look, the light is magic.

Humans are like mosquitoes in the way they relate to light: we are attracted to it, and even more to its warm tones. It is then very natural to want to stare at the solar disk when it sets, or at the part of the horizon where it just disappeared, and admire its red-orange-yellow hues. But there is another spectacle, exquisite in its subtlety and less obvious: cold blues and pinks, hidden in the shadows and opposite the sun, in such quantity that the air seems to be filled with them.

This picture is a prime example: the sun had just set, leaving the scene bathing in a smooth light. With my eyes still used to the red tones of sunset, I turned back and enjoyed a surreal palette of blues and pinks on this Joshua tree forest. The show of sunset I most enjoy often starts when the sun has set already, and is not necessarily where our prime instincts let us believe.
