Taivalköngäs rapids are the main attraction of Oulanka National Park, in the north-east of Finland. Steep slopes and cliffs and rare in the country, as it has been eroded by the work of glaciers in successive ice ages, so the few rapids contrast with the otherwise smooth and quiet rivers of northern Finland.
Likewise, there are only few streams that do not freeze during the winter, at least in surface. Here, the edges of the river have solidified in ice that seems to fight with the more turbulent currents at -15ºC (5ºF).
